Hadspen Garden

Online Archive

Welcome to the open-source online archive of the iconic Hadspen Garden in Somerset.  As we begin building the archive, we welcome you to submit your images, memories and notes of the garden to info@hadspengarden.org

As the first online archive aimed at creating and preserving the collective memory of a garden deemed influential to designers, plants-people and visitors alike, the archive will be a ground-breaking development focused not simply on nostalgia, but on the development of a resource to benefit students, practitioners and enthusiasts of planting design.  With an educational and informative direction, the archive will provide access to photographs, both professional and amateur, as well as news/media items, and contemporary writings on the garden.

We envisage the archive growing through the submission of material by the garden's visiting public, as well as through professionals who have written about or documented the garden during its 20-year history.  With its open-source format, the archive will create an opportunity to discuss the garden's impact on planting design in Britain, serving as a foundation from which to build on the sophisticated approach to colour employed by Nori and Sandra Pope during their time at Hadspen House from 1988-2005.  As the garden created by the Popes is no longer in existence, the archive will offer a view into one of the most acclaimed gardens in Britain's recent history.
